Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:
- Participation (including attendance, effort on speaking in class, and homework preparation): 10%
- Quizzes: 5%
- Video task – Unit 2 & 3: 10%
- Group presentation – Unit 1: 10%
- Statistical description: 10% (due date will be announced in class)
- Summary: 10% (due date will be announced in class)
- Email writing: 10% (due date will be announced in class)
- Midterm – written test: 10%
- Final – oral: 10%
- Final – written test: 15%
Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.
Periodically throughout the semester, writing/listening exercises and pop quizzes will be given in class. These exercises and quizzes CANNOT be made up even if it’s a granted leave.
You will give an individual oral report and a group presentation during the semester.
Individual video task: You will tell a 3-minute personal anecdote or speech based on the discussion questions on Mooc Units 2 & 3.
Group presentation: You and three other students will give a presentation based on Mooc Unit 1. The presentation should be approximately 15 minutes, followed by a 5-minute discussion. Students will be scored individually based on their ability and preparation; however, part of the presentation marks will be the same for each one in the group. More details will be provided in class.
There are three written assignments based on the learning materials and the textbook for the course. The grading rubric for the written assignments is available on the class website.
Writing 1 – Travel Story: Read the story on page 149 and write up your own travel story that may include something that went wrong, a planned action, how the situation was resolved, a new plan for the future, the setting (time, place, protagonist), or how the protagonist reacted.
Writing 2 – Book Review: Choose a book you have read and write up a review about the book. It doesn’t have to be a great book that you want to recommend to others; it could also be a book that needs improvement. Samples will be given in class.
Writing 3 – Email Writing: You will be given a case scenario in school and write your own response. The formal email format is going to be introduced in the first week. Handouts will be available on class website.
The grading rubric for the speaking test is available on the class website. No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor’s permission in advance.
Midterm and final written exams: All materials, including the readings, handouts, and information provided in class will potentially be included on mid-term and final exams. The written tests include vocabulary/grammar questions, a listening/reading section, and short writing tasks.
Final oral exam: Five topics will be announced a week ahead and form your own group, a group of 3. The speaking test requires you your partners to conduct a 5-minute conversation based on the topic drawn out right before the oral exam. Notes are allowed, but you cannot read directly from the scripts. Students will be scored individually based on the following, but not limited to: ability to react to the partner’s questions and to speak for an extended period of time without hesitation, deviation or repetition.
