Attendance and Participation

Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.

In-class Vocabulary Quizzes

Periodically throughout the semester, five vocabulary quizzes will be given in class. These quizzes can NOT be made up.

Topic & Concluding Sentence Group Practice

In groups, students are required to write topic and concluding sentences for corresponding paragraphs. Sentences will be analyzed by the teacher, as well as their peers in class. The best sentence for each of the paragraphs will be chosen among the groups. The teacher will evaluate all sentences from the groups.

Paragraph Writing

Students are asked to write a complete paragraph including all the elements that were addressed in class. At least one form of a citation must be used in the paragraph writing. The piece will be evaluated and graded by the teacher based on the structure, content, and language usage of the paragraph. Examples and a rubric will be provided prior to the assignment.

Creative Story Writing

Students are asked to plan a creative story using the story elements taught in the course. A two-page story, containing a well-elaborated story plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement) is required. Characters (protagonist, antagonist, and fool) in the story should also be fully developed. Examples and a rubric will be provided prior to the assignment

Cause and Effect Writing

Students, in groups of 3, are asked to write a three-paged cause and effect essay using a block format. The paragraph should contain different types of supporting details that were elaborated in the course. Citations should be used. This writing will be evaluated and graded by the teacher based on the structure, content, and language usage of the paragraph. Examples and a rubric will be provided prior to the assignment.

Final Exam

Students will be tested on the content that was covered throughout the course. The test includes a vocabulary section to reflect student’s vocabulary improvement. A second paragraph unscramble section is conducted to check students understanding of transitions used in a process essay. The sentence rewrite section tests students’ ability in the grammar structures that were highlighted in the lectures. A fourth section examines whether students are able to identify and analyze different sections of a paragraph. The final section of the test will require students to write an essay from five given topics.

Writing Assignment Formats

All writing assignments should follow this format.

- Font size 12

- 1 inch (2.54cm) margins on all four sides

- Double-spaced
