Evaluations will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Attendance and participation: 25%

  2. Media use report (individual presentation): 20%

  3. Discussion leading (group project) :20%

  4. Group presentation/final paper (group project): 30% (group presentation: 10%; final paper: 20%)

  5. Peer evaluations: 5%



Attendance and Participation

Students are required to attend the first class in order to take this course. Attendance will be taken at every class period. Five points will be deduced from your total course points for each absence. If a student have a valid excuse to miss a class (e.g. illness), this student should 1). email the instructor before the class period, and 2). provide the instructor satisfactory evidence to substantiate the reason for absence within one week. Students are required to read the required readings each week, ask questions and provide comments during each class period. Both quality and quantity of your discussions will be evaluated.


Discussion Leading

  1. will be divided into 8 discussion leading groups. Each group will sign up to lead class discussion once or twice throughout the semester. Discussion leaders are required to read the topic of the week in greater depth and look for additional materials that are not listed in the required class readings. Discussion leaders should ask questions and provide comments in order to facilitate and moderate class discussion during the class period.


Media Use Report

Each student will choose from one of the topics below and prepare a 10-minute presentation during the semester.

  1. Find two examples of media contents that represent the culture you identify with (e.g. communities, gender, cultures, countries). Find one that is positive and one that is negative. Critically observe the contents and see if there are stereotypes or values embedded in these media messaged. Explain how those messages influence people.

  2. Find two examples of media (e.g. app, game, tv show…etc.), one facilitate positive emotions and one does not facilitate positive emotions. Explain how those media contents may influence people’s thoughts and emotions.

  3. Find a new technology that interests you. Explain possible effects and implications of the technology on changing experiences of media users.

  4. Find a research topic that interests you where you can find two opposing sides of research evidence in media psychology (or psychology in general), such as violent video games, Internet use, or social media use. Explain the two sides of the controversy, and inspect if there are conceptual or measurement differences between the two opposing sides based on theories and empirical evidence.


Group Final Paper

Students will be divided into small groups and work on the final paper together. The final paper are expected to focus on the theory, starting from reviewing related literatures, and following by proposing a series of hypotheses. The final paper will have to follow the APA style conventions (APA 6thstyle), 10 pages long, double spaced, 12 point type, with 1 inch margins. The paper will be due January 9th, 2019 by 3:00pm.LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
