Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:
Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.
Periodically throughout the semester, listening/writing/speaking exercises will be given in class. You should follow instructions and submit your answers, writings or recordings to Moodle or Zuvio in time in class. These exercises can NOT be made up. Please keep a record of your in-class writings by submitting images of your worksheets to Moodle regularly for the instructor’s end-of-semester grading.
You will give an individual oral report and a group presentation during the semester. For the individual report, you will take turns giving a PowerPoint presentation on a self-selected topic for 3~5 minutes. Individual oral presentation guidelines and grading criteria can be seen on Moodle. You need to submit your PowerPoint file to Moodle in advance by your assigned presentation date. During the presentations, each student will offer comments and scores on the presenters’ performance on Zuvio, which will be immediately available to the presenters upon completing their presentations. *Points will be deducted if you change your assigned presentation date except for force majeure causes.
For the group presentation, you and your group members will take turns giving a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation on an assigned unit from MOOC Cross-cultural Communication Online Course (Units 4-6, two groups on one unit). In your presentation, you can choose to summarize the lecture or related resources, share your observations about one discussion question, or present any topics related to the unit. Each member should have a chance to speak on stage. Each group member needs to fill out the form of “Self-and-peer-review of group presentation” on Zuvio within one week after your group presentation. Pleas post your PPT of group presentation to Moodle in advance. *Your presentation will be timed, and points will be deducted if your presentation exceeds 15 minutes.
In addition to the periodic in-class and take-home writing exercises, there will be two major written assignments: a an advice column (based on Keynote 4 Unit 8, p. 112), and a statement of purpose for student exchange program. More details will be provided in class. The grading rubric for the written assignments is available on Moodle.
All materials, including the readings, handouts, and information provided in class will potentially be included on the final exam. The final exam is a written test on vocabulary/grammar questions, a reading section, and short writing tasks. No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor’s permission in advance.
